In this narrative review, we highlight the role of environmental microbiota in human health and provide insights into how we can optimise human health through well-designed cities, urban landscapes and buildings.
By leveraging the strengths of multiple disciplines, microbiome-based urban design can develop innovative, evidence-based interventions that address the complex interplay of environmental and human health factors in urban ecosystems.

Moving forward, it's essential to keep these visual contexts in mind when discussing Microbially Responsive Urban Design.
This approach highlights how cultural norms, health perceptions and planning traditions shape the mechanisms and health pathways of Biophilic Design, helping avoid mechanical transfer of design models and supporting the development of culturally appropriate, context-responsive strategies.
In tackling these shared challenges, present trends in sustainable design for the practice of the built environment include bioinspired approaches, which means the geometry (form) of the plant or animal is copied to make an organicor naturebased design statement. We set out a framework for managing construction projects so that multidisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners can explicitly consider environmental microbiota in design and construction contexts, thereby increasing ecosystem functionality and public health. We discuss these results in the context of community assembly theory, concluding that urban soil microbial community composition and diversity in engineered habitats are driven largely by environmental filtering, whereas stochastic processes are more important among non-engineered soils. This research will enable urban landscape managers to incorporate initial considerations for the microbiome in their development projects to promote human and ecosystem health.
