I used to think L or light might have really liked each other despite their cat and mouse game but after the 1 millionth rewatch of the series and my memories from how to read the death note I don't think L genuinely liked light at all. I think he may have even despised light and his character. I think he would make comments here and there to make light feel comfortable enough for him to.

Then Light answered that on the outside, Ryuuga/L is his friend, but actually L is Kira's enemy. And in various other pages, you see Light thinking about "killing L" - hardly a thing a friend would do. As far as I know there wasn't a leg washing scene in the manga. The only way to beat Light in the series was for two other geniuses to work together. Nobody was going to beat him by themselves.
