What Is a Get Up Exercise? Benefits, Form & Variations

Among the most fundamental yet frequently misunderstood movements in functional fitness, the get up exercise stands as a cornerstone of physical capability. Often mistaken for a simple stretching maneuver, this ground-based sequence is a full-body integration test that reveals how well you can coordinate strength, mobility, and balance. Mastering this movement transcends aesthetics; it is a practical skill that enhances joint health, improves posture, and builds resilience for everyday tasks.

Defining the Get Up Exercise

A get up exercise is a multi-step movement pattern that transitions the body from a lying position on the floor to a standing position and back again. It is an organized series of steps that require you to move with control and intentionality. Unlike isolated lifts that focus on a single plane of motion, this exercise is a dynamic puzzle where every segment of your body must work in harmony. It demands stability from the core, strength from the legs, and flexibility from the shoulders and hips, making it a comprehensive assessment of overall athleticism.

Breaking Down the Mechanics

The Sequential Phases

To understand what is a get up exercise, one must deconstruct the sequence. The movement typically begins with the "lying windmill" to establish the base. This is followed by the high bridge or "elbow plank" position, which tests core integrity. The critical transition occurs when you swing the leg through to create a stable "tall sit." From there, the "side bridge" or "bridge" position challenges lateral stability before you finally hinge to half-kneeling and then to a full standing position. Each phase acts as a checkpoint, ensuring movement quality before progressing.

Joint and Muscle Involvement

Performing this exercise engages a surprising number of muscle groups simultaneously. The posterior chain—specifically the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back—is essential for the initial lift off the floor. The core muscles, including the abdominals and obliques, must fire continuously to prevent collapse. The shoulders and upper back require stability to support the weight of the arm, while the wrists and forearms act as the foundation. Even the neck muscles play a role in maintaining proper alignment of the spine throughout the arc of motion.

Benefits for Daily Life and Performance

The primary benefit of training this pattern is its direct correlation with real-world functionality. Think about how often you transition between lying, sitting, and standing throughout the day. Getting up from the floor gracefully is a skill that diminishes with age if not practiced. Regularly performing this exercise improves hip flexibility, shoulder mobility, and trunk control, which can alleviate chronic pain. It teaches the nervous system to fire muscles in the correct sequence, enhancing coordination that translates to better performance in sports and other physical activities.

Common Misconceptions

Many people assume that the only requirement for this movement is flexibility. While range of motion is important, stability is equally, if not more, critical. Another common myth is that it is merely a "stretching" exercise. While it does lengthen muscles, the demand for isometric strength and anti-rotation is significant. Additionally, some believe the pace should always be slow. While control is paramount, varying the tempo—such as performing a fast get up for athletic conditioning or a slow tempo for structural integrity—can yield different physiological adaptations.

Variations and Progressions

Because the get up is so scalable, it is suitable for nearly every fitness level. Beginners often start with a "tall kneeling" get up, reducing the range of motion to focus on balance. The classic "standard get up" uses a straight arm to hold a light weight or no weight at all. For advanced practitioners, the "Kettebell get up" is the gold standard, requiring strict form due to the offset load. Other variations include the "Dumbbell get up" or the "Cross-body get up," which introduce rotational challenges to further test core stability.

How to Perform a Standard Get Up

To integrate this movement safely, follow this general sequence. Lie on your back with one leg bent and the opposite arm extended overhead. Press through the bent leg to lift your hips into a bridge. Sweep the straight leg through to the outside of your hand, transitioning to a tall sit. Rotate your body into a side plank position, then lower into a half-kneeling stance. Keeping your torso upright, step the trailing foot forward to stand fully. To return, reverse the process with control, prioritizing spinal alignment over speed.

Getting up from the floor can be tricky depending on what strength and mobility you are working with ☝🏽

It also can depend if you can tolerate kneeling or not 🧎‍♀️

It is possible even with knee arthritis or after a knee replacement to regain the tolerance to kneeling. I have a video on my YouTube channel showing how to do that 🙌🏼

Of course there are many different variations of getting up and these are just a few

It’s so important to feel safe and supported when getting up but also to have the ability to do so in case you find yourself on the floor either purposefully or not purposefully 🫣
