The physical work begins with clearing the site of grass, topsoil, and any organic debris that could settle and cause the slab to settle unevenly. For a 4-inch slab, excavate the area to a depth of approximately 6 to 8 inches, allowing space for a base layer of gravel and the concrete itself. Use a flat-bottomed shovel or a rented trencher to create clean, vertical edges for the form to rest against.
Building the Form
Construct the formwork using 2x6 or 2x8 lumber, securing it tightly to the ground with wooden stakes driven into the ground every 2 to 3 feet. It is imperative that the top of the form boards is perfectly level; any inconsistency here will result in an uneven slab. To prevent the wood from absorbing moisture from the concrete, consider lining the interior of the forms with a plastic sheet or applying a form release agent.

Base Preparation and Reinforcement

As soon as the surface is finished, cover the slab with plastic sheeting or damp burlap to trap moisture and prevent rapid drying. Maintain this moisture barrier for at least 48 to 72 hours. Avoid walking on the slab or allowing water to pool on it during this period to prevent surface damage.
Final Sealing
After the concrete has fully cured for approximately one week, apply a high-quality penetrating sealer. A sealer protects the patio from stains, oil leaks from vehicles, and surface deterioration caused by weather.
