Understanding the Drain Assembly Components

The Trap and Tailpiece
The vertical pipe that connects directly to the bottom of the sink drain is called the tailpiece. Extending from the end of this pipe is the trap, the curved section of pipe beneath the sink. The trap is a critical safety feature; it holds a constant amount of water, creating a seal that prevents sewer gases from entering your home. Finally, the waste line connects the trap to your main sewer line or wall outlet.

Before touching any plumbing, turn off the water supply valves located under the sink. If you are replacing a drain, ensure the sink is empty and clean to avoid losing small parts down the drain during removal.

Removing the Old Drain Assembly
If you are upgrading an existing sink, the first step is to remove the old hardware. Over time, mineral deposits and rust can seize pipes, making them difficult to loosen.
Use an adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers to loosen the mounting nut located beneath the sink. If the nut is stubborn, applying a penetrating oil and allowing it to sit for 15 minutes usually does the trick. Once the nut is loose, carefully unscrew the drain body from the sink. First, attach the tailpiece to the drain body if it isn’t already connected. Next, assemble the trap pieces (the U-bend and the straight tailpiece) by hand. Screw the curved trap onto the tailpiece under the sink, and then connect the trap arm (the straight pipe that exits the cabinet) to the other side. Hand-tighten both connections. Once everything is aligned, use your wrench to give the fittings a quarter-turn past hand-tight. This provides enough resistance to prevent loosening without damaging the pipes.
Testing for Leaks and Final Adjustments
Before you consider the job complete, you must test the integrity of your work. Running water through the pipes will reveal any hidden mistakes that are not visible in a dry run.
Turn the water supply valves back on slowly and let the sink fill. While the sink is filling, inspect the cabinet ceiling and the pipes below for any signs of moisture or drips.
