The stunning looks of a multimillion-dollar BMW 507 yet the drivability of a late-model sports car: That was the promise of the BMW Z8. And it delivered. The easiest way to tell that the model has its fans? Ever since its release nearly 20 years ago, prices have remained strong.

If the media agrees on one thing, it's that it will beg to differ. So it was at the launch of the BMW Z8, in 2000. After driving it for the first time, Autocar concluded, "Hard to think of a surer recipe for success".

Shortly after, evo was scathing to the point that it asked, "Why did BMW build this car?". Who was right? Before slipping behind the wheel and attempting to answer that. The 507 doesn't do anything for me - there's plenty of other cars of similar vintage that I much prefer, be they Maserati or Chevrolet.

The Z8, on the other hand, while inspired by the 507, is one of my favorite convertibles ever. Its got the right bulges without being overdone. Let us introduce, or possibly reintroduce, the magnificently underappreciated BMW Z8.
