Bmw E46 Vs E39

E46 vs E39? I found 2 cars that are in my sweet spot and ones I can DIY This E46 is in great condition (one spot on the driver seat looks wierd, can't tell if the leather is torn) but also 66k miles, $6,200.

E46 VS E39 Build Quality Anyone here own both and have any comments on build quality between these two cars? Materials used or just little things that you appreciate in one car more than the other. The E46 and E39 are old cars now, but even when new, the 5 series was a more luxurious car than the 3 series. If you find a really good example of each now, then the 5 series will 'feel' more solid and robust.

The E39 doesn't accelerate as fast and doesn't stop as quick. The E39 is just kind of muted all around in how it reacts to driver inputs (compared to the E46). But it is more refined. When you punch it in a 530i the engine spools up and the car starts scooting, but the engine noise is a bit distant, muffled, and contained.

The E46 feels like a smaller e39 and makes a more sporty use of the m54b30 than the e39 which is more cruise like. Pro's of the e46 besides more sporty is weight, handling, economy, maintenance costs I loved my e39 530i but all e39's are plagued with abs units going out on them due to being placed direcly above the catalysts.

I love the E39 sports. Would seriously consider chopping my coupe in for one. Driven and owned a few E46's and driven loads of E39's and would say that they're both great cars The non sport, boggo E39's have aged brutally though.

The E39 cabin isn't actually that much bigger than the E46 cabin.

The E46 comes with a variety of engine options, ranging from the fuel-efficient four-cylinder 318i to the fire-breathing straight-six M3. And while they all deliver that trademark BMW performance, the sweet spot lies in the middle with the 330i. Packing a 3.0-liter straight-six engine with 231 horsepower, this baby can hit 60 mph in just 6.1.

I've had 3 E46's (330i, 330Ci and M3), currently have 2 e39s in the fleet (530i and 540i), the e39 is just an incredible all rounder and for a daily, I would always choose the e39, it's definitely better built (quieter, smoother and comfier).
