E46 vs E39? I found 2 cars that are in my sweet spot and ones I can DIY This E46 is in great condition (one spot on the driver seat looks wierd, can't tell if the leather is torn) but also 66k miles, $6,200.

The E46 and E39 are old cars now, but even when new, the 5 series was a more luxurious car than the 3 series. If you find a really good example of each now, then the 5 series will 'feel' more solid and robust.
The E39 doesn't accelerate as fast and doesn't stop as quick. The E39 is just kind of muted all around in how it reacts to driver inputs (compared to the E46). But it is more refined.
