Opening your pool after a long winter is an exciting moment, but it is more than just removing the cover and turning on the pump. The water has been stagnant, and the pool environment has been exposed to the elements, creating a specific set of conditions that must be addressed before any swimmer touches the water. A methodical restart is the only way to ensure a safe, clear, and balanced pool for the season.

Initial Debris Removal and Equipment Inspection

The first step is a physical cleanup of the pool structure. You will need a sturdy leaf net to scoop out the large debris that accumulated over the winter, such as leaves, twigs, and dirt. While doing this, take a moment to visually inspect the pool walls and floor for any cracks, chips, or signs of winter damage. Equally important is checking the equipment pad; look for any critters that may have made the pump or heater their winter home and clear the area of nests or debris.

Filter System Priming and Startup

Before you even think about adding chemicals, the filtration system needs to be operational. Remove the drain plug from the pump and skimmer baskets, and then prime the pump manually if your model requires it. Turn the pump on and watch the plumbing lines for any leaks or air bubbles. If the pump does not prime immediately or the water flow seems weak, you may have an air leak that needs to be addressed to prevent motor damage.

Water Chemistry: The Foundation of Safety

This is the most critical phase of the restart. Simply turning on the filter is not enough; the water chemistry needs to be analyzed and corrected. Do not let the pressure stay high; this restricts water flow and strains the pump. You must backwash a sand or DE filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions until the sight glass is clear. If you have a cartridge filter, you will need to remove and hose down the elements thoroughly. Performing this maintenance early prevents overheating and ensures your system runs efficiently all summer long.

Final Water Balance and Routine Checks

Once the water is clear, perform a final comprehensive water test. Adjust the pH and alkalinity to the optimal range to ensure the water is comfortable for swimmers and kind to the pool’s plaster and equipment. A balanced pool prevents scaling and corrosion. Going forward, establish a routine: run the pump for the recommended duration daily, brush the walls weekly, and check the chemical levels consistently. This proactive approach to maintenance saves time, money, and frustration later in the season.
