Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, was a princely state ruled by a Hindu maharaja at the time of partition. The question of its accession to either India or Pakistan became a contentious issue, as both countries claimed the region based on religious demographics and strategic interests. The maharaja initially chose to remain independent but later acceded to India, sparking the First Kashmir War.

The Spark of the Conflict

The immediate trigger for the war was the invasion of Kashmir by tribesmen from Pakistan, supported by the Pakistani military. These tribesmen, known as 'lashkars', crossed the border into Kashmir with the aim of overthrowing the maharaja and annexing the region to Pakistan.

The invasion was facilitated by Pakistan's belief that the Kashmiris would welcome them as liberators and that the maharaja's rule was illegitimate. However, the intervention of the Indian military in support of the maharaja turned the conflict into a full-blown war.

India's intervention in Kashmir was based on the maharaja's Instrument of Accession, which he signed on October 26, 1947. This document transferred power to India, and in response, India sent its military to defend Kashmir. This marked the beginning of the First Kashmir War.

The conflict soon escalated, and both sides appealed to the United Nations for mediation. The UN Security Council passed several resolutions, including Resolution 47, which called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Pakistani forces. However, the war continued until a ceasefire was finally agreed upon in January 1949.

The ceasefire line, also known as the Line of Control (LoC), was established as a result of the Karachi Agreement in 1949. This line divided Kashmir into two parts, with Pakistan controlling approximately one-third of the region and India controlling the remaining two-thirds.

The war had significant consequences for the region. It led to the displacement of a large number of people, both Muslims and Hindus, and it set the stage for the ongoing conflict over Kashmir. The dispute has since escalated into several other wars and crises, including the 1965 and 1971 wars, the 1990 Kashmir insurgency, and numerous skirmishes along the LoC.
