A 4 series is a coupe but can have 4 doors (and a hatch). They do the same with the X series (the SUV's). The X5 is boxy, the X6 is coupe roof-lined.
I don't necessarily agree with this BMW marketing mumbo jumbo (or design choices lately) but what I do know is that I own a 440i F36 and having a sleek looking practical hatchback is awesome. For me the concept of a 4 series gran coupe seems a but unnecessary at first sight, since it's the 4 door version of a 2 door version of a 4 door version. Yes it has a different trunk lid and therefore a better opening.
