Create a Stylish DIY Floating Shelf for Your Kitchen
Elevate your kitchen storage game with a sleek and functional DIY floating shelf. Not only does this project add a modern touch to your space, but it's also a practical way to maximize your wall space. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own floating shelf, no professional help required.
Materials Needed
- Wood board (1" thick, cut to desired length and width)
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Wall anchors (expansion bolts or toggle bolts)
- Saw (hand saw, miter saw, or circular saw)
- Drill and driver bits
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Clamps
Design Your Shelf
Before you start, decide on the size and shape of your shelf. Consider the wall space you have and what you'll be storing. For a simple, modern look, opt for a rectangular shelf. You can also create a more dynamic design with multiple shelves or a corner shelf.
Cut and Prepare the Wood
Using your saw, cut the wood board to your desired length and width. If you're creating a corner shelf, you'll need to cut the wood at a 45-degree angle. Sand the edges and surface of the wood to remove any rough spots.

Create the Support Brackets
To make the shelf appear to "float," you'll need to create support brackets. Cut two pieces of wood, 2" x 2" x 4", for the brackets. Drill a pilot hole into the top of each bracket, about 1" from the back edge.
Assemble the Shelf
Apply wood glue along the edges of the shelf where the brackets will be attached. Place the brackets on either end of the shelf, aligning the back edge with the back of the shelf. Use clamps to hold the brackets in place while the glue dries.
Install the Floating Shelf
Once the glue is dry, it's time to install your shelf. First, locate the studs in your wall using a stud finder. Mark the stud locations with a pencil. If you can't find studs, you'll need to use wall anchors.

Hold the shelf up to the wall, aligning it with your marks. Using a level to ensure it's straight, mark the screw holes on the wall. Drill pilot holes at these marks.
Attach the shelf to the wall using 1-1/4" screws. If you're not attaching the shelf to a stud, use wall anchors and 2-1/2" screws. Make sure the screws are long enough to go through the bracket and into the wall.
Finishing Touches
If desired, stain or paint your shelf to match your kitchen decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before placing items on the shelf.
Now that your DIY floating shelf is installed, you can proudly display your favorite dishes, cookbooks, or decorative items. This stylish and functional addition to your kitchen is sure to impress guests and make your space feel more organized.
