Building a Custom DVD Shelf: A Step-by-Step Guide
In the age of digital streaming, DVDs might seem like a thing of the past. However, for many, they remain a cherished part of their media collection. If you're looking to organize and display your DVDs in style, building a custom DVD shelf is a rewarding DIY project. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you create the perfect storage solution for your movie collection.
Materials Needed
Before you start, gather the following materials:
- Plywood (1/2" or 3/4" thickness, depending on the size of your shelf)
- 2x4 lumber for supports
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional, for finishing)
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
Designing Your DVD Shelf
First, decide on the size and style of your shelf. Consider the space you have available and the number of DVDs you want to store. A standard DVD case is about 7.5" wide, 5.75" high, and 0.5" thick. For a simple, single-row shelf, you can make each compartment around 8" wide and 6" high. For multiple rows, increase the height accordingly.

Measuring and Cutting
Once you've designed your shelf, measure and cut your plywood and lumber pieces. For a simple, single-row shelf, you'll need:
- Two pieces of plywood for the sides (height x depth)
- One piece of plywood for the back (height x width)
- One piece of plywood for the bottom (width x depth)
- Two pieces of 2x4 for the supports (width - 1.5" for the space between the supports)
Use a circular saw to cut your pieces to size. If you're not comfortable with this step, you can have the hardware store cut the pieces for you.
Assembling the Shelf
Start by attaching the back piece to the sides using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. Clamp the pieces together while the glue dries. Next, attach the bottom piece to the sides and back using the same method. Finally, attach the supports to the inside of the shelf, spacing them evenly apart. Use 2-1/2" screws for this step.

Creating the DVD Compartments
To create individual compartments for your DVDs, cut strips of plywood to fit between the supports. These strips should be the height of your shelf minus the height of a DVD case. Attach these strips to the front of the shelf using wood glue and brad nails or small finishing nails. This will create individual spaces for your DVDs.
Finishing Touches
Once the glue has dried, sand any rough edges with 120-grit sandpaper. If desired, stain or paint your shelf to match your room's decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before placing your DVDs on the shelf.
Installing Your DVD Shelf
Before installing your shelf, ensure the wall you'll be mounting it to is secure and can support the weight of your DVDs. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall, then attach the shelf to the wall using screws or wall anchors. Make sure the shelf is level as you install it.

Organizing Your DVD Collection
Now that your shelf is complete, it's time to organize your DVDs. You can arrange them alphabetically, by genre, or by your favorite movies. With your new custom DVD shelf, you'll not only have a functional storage solution, but also a stylish display for your movie collection.
