Removing an RV Shower Faucet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on an RV adventure is an exciting experience, but it comes with its own set of maintenance tasks. One such task is replacing or repairing your RV shower faucet. Whether it's a leaky faucet or you're aiming to upgrade to a newer model, this guide will walk you through the process of removing an RV shower faucet.

Understanding Your RV Shower Faucet

Before you start, it's crucial to understand the type of faucet you have. RV shower faucets can be either compression or ball-type. Compression faucets have two handles that control the water flow and temperature, while ball-type faucets have a single handle that controls both. This guide will focus on removing a ball-type faucet, as they are more common in RVs.

Tools You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Channel locks or adjustable pliers
  • Teflon tape
  • New faucet (if replacing)
  • Rags or towels

Preparation: Turning Off the Water Supply

The first step in removing your RV shower faucet is to turn off the water supply. Locate the water supply valves under your RV. They should be near the shower. Turn the valves clockwise to close them. If the valves are stiff, you may need to use a wrench. Once the water is off, open the faucet to relieve any remaining pressure.

Removing the Faucet Handle

Start by removing the faucet handle. For a ball-type faucet, you'll need to remove the handle screw. It's usually located under a decorative cap, which you can pry off with a flathead screwdriver. Once the cap is off, unscrew the handle screw using an adjustable wrench. Pull off the handle.

Removing the Faucet Assembly

With the handle off, you should see the faucet assembly. This is the part that controls the water flow. To remove it, you'll need to disconnect the water supply lines. Use channel locks or adjustable pliers to loosen and remove the lines. Be careful not to damage them.

Once the lines are disconnected, you should be able to pull out the faucet assembly. If it's stuck, you may need to use a bit of force. If it's still not budging, you can try using a rubber mallet to tap it gently.

Inspecting the Area and Preparing for the New Faucet

With the old faucet removed, take a moment to inspect the area. Check for any signs of leaks or damage. If you're replacing the faucet, now is a good time to ensure the new one will fit. If you're repairing the old one, you can start the repair process.

If you're installing a new faucet, you'll need to prepare the area. Clean the area around the faucet hole to ensure a good seal. Apply a thin layer of Teflon tape around the threads of the new faucet. This will help to prevent leaks.

Installing the New Faucet (if replacing)

To install the new faucet, simply reverse the removal process. Insert the new faucet into the hole and screw it in by hand as far as you can. Then, use a wrench to tighten it. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the faucet.

Once the faucet is installed, reconnect the water supply lines. Turn the water supply valves back on and check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, your new faucet is installed and ready to use.
