Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890-1980 is the first exhibition to examine the extensive design exchanges between the United States and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) during the 20th century. The exhibition also introduced textiles with bold patterns, such as those from Finland's Marimekko, which would later become a favorite in American homes. Influence on American Design and Culture The success of *Design in Scandinavia* helped fuel America's growing fascination with Scandinavian modernism.
An extensive exhibition, Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890-1980, is currently on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which Decorative Arts Trust members had the privilege of enjoying during a special tour in early December (figure 1). The exhibition considers Scandinavian design's enduring impact on American culture, as well as the United States' influence on Scandinavian Design, over nearly 100 years of cultural exchange. It features over 175 captivating examples of furniture, industrial design, textiles, ceramics, glass, metalwork, jewelry and lighting drawn from LACMA's collection as well as American and Nordic. The exhibit Scandinavian Design & USA - People, Encounters and Ideas, 1890-1980 is open at Stockholm Nationalmuseum in Sweden through January 9, 2022.
This exhibit is the product of extensive international collaboration and new research and shows the relationship between Scandinavian and American design in the 20th century. The exhibition proposes an alternative to the dominant narrative that cites Germany and central Europe as the primary influences of modern American design, presenting new scholarship on the crucial impact the Scandinavian countries and America had on one another's material culture.
