The only potential mechanical problems with an '86 R80RT are in the transmission, BMW having deleted a locating circlip. This affects all models '85-'94, the circlip only returning at the very end of production. Since this engine was originally designed to be 750cc, the increase to 800 is minimal and the 800 engine is very smooth running.

The R80 is generally a sweeter running bike than the R100 and less likely to leak oil from the cylinder base gaskets. I am pretty familiar with the /6 and /5 airheads, but am looking at a 1984 R80RT. Haven't had any experience with airheads newer than 1976. Any advice, comments, opinions, etc.? Anything peculiar I need to be on the lookout? How would you compare the ride/behavior of this bike versus a 1975.
