Hedgehog Quill Colors

A guide to hedgehog colors, quill patterns, and facial markings. Quill color: Banding is average-wide and is tan or very light pale brown color. Body color: skin is typically nude or white and belly may be mottled tan or pale brown.

There are so many hedgehog colors that it can be hard to know where to start! Learn about the different types of colors and classes in our simple guide. Some hedgehogs have only a few white quills as babies but are almost entirely white after quilling. Hedgehogs tend to get lighter when they get older.

White White patterned hedgehogs have a base color, such as gray. However, 90%+ of their quills are unbanded. The presence of 10% or less banded quills distinguishes them from the double white pattern.

Hedgehog Color Guide (This is currently a work in progress) ALBINO 1. 2 Bright Red Eyes. If eyes are 2 different colors, black, or deep ruby your hog is not albino.

2. Absence of banding on quills. If your hog has even one banded quill, it is not albino.

3. Quills are either white or a very pale light yellow. The Cotty Colors OAK BROWN - This color is kind of a milk chocolate meets sun kissed ginger snaps, with up to 30% all white quills mixed in.

It's too close to cinnicot to be chocolate and to close to chocolate to be cinnicot. Sometimes you will see chocolate and/ or cinnicot quills mixed in. This is by far my favorite hedgehog color.

Colours refers to the colouration on the mask, eyes, skin and banding on the hogs quills. As African Pygmy Hogs were originally a cross breed between the White bellied and Algerian hedgehogs, they can still demonstrate this in facial markings. White bellied are generally paler and less distinctive in facial markings, and display less mottling on the belly, while Algerian demonstrate darker.
