DIY Lava Lamp

Who doesn't love a lava lamp? This classic science project is easy to make and helps children understand the concept of polarity and density. All you need are some household materials like water, oil, food coloring, and a plastic bottle.

To create your lava lamp, fill the bottle about halfway with vegetable oil, then slowly pour water into the bottle until it's nearly full. Add a few drops of food coloring, then seal the bottle. As the food coloring settles, it'll begin to "lava lamp" up and down, demonstrating the polarity of the water and oil.

First, dissolve as much borax as possible in the hot water. Then, tie a pipe cleaner around the string and place it in the jar. Pour the borax water into the jar, being careful not to get water on the pipe cleaner. Hang the jar with the string from a spoon or a lid, and watch the crystals grow over a few days.
