I've only played through TTYD back when I first got it Christmas of 2004. But mine was red too, and I was beyond overjoyed because red is my favorite color. But I didn't find out until years later that the Yoshi's color depends on how many minutes you had it's egg before it hatched.
Needless to say, I got stupidly lucky.
