Keep the concrete moist for at least 48 to 72 hours by covering it with plastic sheeting or spraying it with water regularly to prevent cracks caused by rapid drying.
Expansion and Joints
Concrete is a living material that expands in heat and contracts in cold weather. If this movement is restricted, the slab will crack. Control joints are intentional weaknesses placed in the slab to manage this stress. Without them, you risk random, spiderweb-like cracking that is difficult to repair.
When cutting joints, timing is everything. If you wait too long, the concrete is too hard, and the saw will drag; if you cut too early, the slab may slump or deform. A general guideline is to wait until the concrete has gained sufficient strength to support the weight of a person, usually between 4 and 6 hours after pouring, but always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific mix used.
