The BMW M3 CS stands as a rare, high-performance homage to the legendary E30 M3, blending heritage with modern engineering. Understanding how many M3 CS cars were made reveals a limited-run legacy that fuels collector interest and underscores its exclusivity in the BMW lineup.
Only 20 BMW M3 CS models were officially produced between 1985 and 1987, making this one of the rarest variants of the M3 series. Limited to just over two decades, production began in 1985 under BMW’s M division, with final units rolling off assembly lines around 1987. This small production run reflects its status as a collector’s car rather than a mass-market model.
The M3 CS was built on the E30 platform but featured a distinctive carbon-fiber body, revised aerodynamics, and enhanced performance upgrades over standard M3 variants. Its hand-built nature and exclusivity—limited to fewer than 20 units—have made it a prized piece among vintage BMW enthusiasts and collectors seeking rare automotive history.
Due to its ultra-limited production, the M3 CS holds immense value in the collector car market. Each surviving unit represents a unique chapter in BMW’s motorsport heritage. Enthusiasts track production records closely, as authentic M3 CS cars are exceedingly scarce, driving demand and cementing its reputation as a legendary icon within the BMW M3 family.
With just 20 BMW M3 CS models ever built, this model’s rarity defines its legacy. From its 1985–1987 production to its enduring collector appeal, the M3 CS remains a symbol of precision engineering and exclusivity in the world of high-performance sedans.
The previous generation (F80 M3 CS was limited to 1,200 units and the M5 CS to approximately 1,000, but both the M4 CS (3,000 units over two years) and M2 CS (2,200 units) were more abundant. A brand-new vehicle, code-named G20, will be debuted at the 2018 Paris Auto Show, marking the end of the line for the current generation of the 3 Series, code. BMW capped CS production at 1,200 units; approximately 550 of those were sent to the United States. Already the base model of the CS, the BMW M3 F80, raised the bar another notch in terms of performance and driving dynamics when it was launched. Four years later, when production drew to a close in 2018, M GmbH decided that the series deserved a supreme sign-off. Enter the first BMW M3 CS, a limited-run special-edition model that, thanks to optimised engine power, special equipment features.
Thanks Rosetta! Very early somebody asked the question how many CS were there, did not realise the post was so old but here is the answer in case it has not been posted up! BMW produced a total of 3,011 E46 M3 coupes with the optional Competition Package (ZCP). The breakdown by model type is as follows: BL91 = 326 examples, BL92 (designated as the M3 CS in the United Kingdom) = 275 examples. But even if BMW produce way less M3's, they're still more in demand on a ratio basis.
M3's also hold their value way better than M4's. M3's are more appreciated in its asset class compared to an M4. That's just a fact.
