How Many Crate and Barrel Stores Are There? Find the Answer Now

For anyone looking to furnish a home or browse stylish home decor, understanding the retail landscape is essential. When considering the question of how many crate and barrel stores are there, the answer reveals a brand deeply integrated into the American and Canadian lifestyle. Crate & Barrel has evolved from a single Chicago hardware store in 1962 into a major multi-channel retailer, serving as a primary destination for contemporary furniture, kitchenware, and textiles.

The Current Count of Crate & Barrel Stores

As of 2024, the total number of distinct Crate & Barrel physical locations in the United States and Canada sits just under 100. This figure represents the combination of traditional furniture galleries and the more compact, urban-focused Crate & Barrel Outlet formats. While the exact number fluctuates slightly year over year due to strategic closures and new openings, the brand maintains a significant physical footprint designed to provide customers with a tangible experience before purchase.

Breaking Down the Formats

Not all stores are created equal, and the count varies significantly depending on the format you are tracking. The traditional "Gallery" stores are the large-format destinations featuring extensive furniture showrooms, usually occupying a space of 80,000 square feet or more. These are the primary locations you think of when asking how many crate and barrel stores exist. In contrast, "The Bazaar" locations are smaller design centers focused on kitchen and bath, while "Outlet" stores offer past-season and value items in a more compact setting.

Geographic Distribution and Market Presence

The brand’s distribution is heavily concentrated in major metropolitan areas across the US and Canada. You will find a high density of stores in states like California, New York, Texas, and Illinois, where large suburban shopping destinations are common. The strategy relies on placing these hubs within driving distance of affluent suburban customers who are investing in major home purchases, ensuring the brand remains visible and accessible to its target demographic.

• Traditional Galleries: These anchor the brand's presence, offering a full suite of furniture, lighting, and rugs.
• The Bazaar: Smaller footprint stores focusing on cabinetry, countertops, and smaller kitchen accessories.
• Outlet Stores: Dedicated to clearance and value merchandise, providing savings on previous collections.
• Pop-up and Seasonal: Temporary locations designed for specific holidays or marketing campaigns.

The Digital Shift and Omnichannel Strategy

While the physical count is a key metric, the brand’s definition of "a store" has expanded significantly. In the modern retail environment, Crate & Barrel operates a robust e-commerce platform that functions as a virtual store. Furthermore, the introduction of furniture delivery and assembly services has blurred the line between online and offline. This omnichannel approach means that the brand’s presence is no longer limited to brick-and-mortar locations, allowing them to serve a wider geographic area without the corresponding cost of opening a new physical gallery.

Comparing the Competitive Landscape

To truly understand the number of Crate & Barrel locations, it is helpful to compare them to competitors. When you look at how many crate and barrel stores exist versus competitors like West Elm or CB2, the distinction becomes clear. West Elm operates a very similar number of stores, indicating a comparable market strategy focused on the high-traffic mall and lifestyle center market. This parity in physical locations highlights the intense competition for premium home goods retail space.

Future Outlook and Strategic Evolution

The number of crate and barrel stores is unlikely to explode in the near future. The retail climate is shifting, and the brand is adapting to a "smarter, not bigger" approach. This involves optimizing existing square footage, closing underperforming locations in favor of larger regional hubs, and leveraging their stores as fulfillment centers for online orders. The focus is moving from pure headcount of locations to the profitability and efficiency of each individual store.
