Back in the days of 11.04, using Gnome2 with compiz, there actually was a Negative feature that could negate the content of any window, making the background black and the font white. Much easier on the eyes for me. Yet since 11.10, using gnome shell with mutter, I have no.

Inverting colors is extremely useful. For example, say you have dark mode and you open some PDF with white pages, you can simply invert the colors to make it black with white text. I found your post while looking for a way to zoom using mouse. Invert color the whole Gnome Desktop Environment for reading purposes. This extention use xcalib program for inverting the color, so you need to install xcalib first (in debian-based ditro you can use 'sudo apt-get install xcalib').

Replicating Windows 10 magnifier color inverter feature on Ubuntu Mate has been a series of dashed hopes for me. Here are the things I've tried: xrandr. the xrandr-invert hack shows a noticable delay between un-inversion and inversion when opening or closing overview mode.

This is solved by using gnome 32+ and/or disabling/not having xrandr. I've looked at doing this via a colour scheme (high contrast inverted) in Gnome3 without success - with liferea and icedove, menus and sidebars had the inverted color scheme but the parts where actual text is displayed where still black on white. Maybe there's a better scheme for this purpose?
