I think maybe it's optional extras? I occasionally drive the 3 series estate we have at work, and the boot button opens/closes the tailgate altogether. My 11 reg 1 series just pops the catch though, I still have to open it manually. And only when the car's already unlocked too, so it seems quite a pointless function tbh.
