I recently removed the abs from a 2004 R1100S with similar miles. When I started working on the bike (purchase it cheap with improper brake function) I also wanted to keep the servo brakes. Eventually, after a lot of reading, I decided to take the system out.
My conclusion was that I could get the system working, but because there are so many different possible failure modes I would. The 2002 RT doesn't utilize ABS 1 or 2 but rather iABS (for it's time, the most advanced braking system available on a motorcycle).
