A quarter of a century ago in 1992, BMW unveiled its born-again Boxer R1100, the descendants of which are still with us today in R1200 guise. This fuel-injected eight-valve twin with Telelever front suspension underpinned the German manufacturer's resurgence in the following decade, when BMW Motorrad's sales volume tripled from a mere 30,000 bikes a year at the start of the 1990s to close. The good reason for Max Friz's 1923 BMW Boxer design is that it put the air-cooled cylinders out in the free air stream for equal and maximum cooling.
But this R1 engine has liquid cooling. What are its cylinders doing sticking out to the sides in a style that dates back to the Weimar Republic? The BMW R1100S is a sports motorcycle that was manufactured by BMW Motorrad between 1998 and 2005.
