The first light rail vehicle (LRV) for the Valley Line West light rail transit (LRT) has arrived in Edmonton, marking a major milestone for the project.

Shipped in two sections from Hyundai Rotem Company's facility in Changwon, South Korea, the vehicle underwent extensive testing before being loaded on July 1 onto a roll-on/roll. The LRVs will be put into service on Edmonton 's 14 km, C$2 6bn Valley Line West project. This is the second phase of a 27 km cross.

The first Hyundai Rotem tram for Edmonton's Valley Line West has arrived, and before entering service, it must undergo at least 2,000 kilometers of test runs. Hyundai Rotem plans to sequentially supply all vehicles starting with this initial batch. The supplied vehicle is a bidirectional, low-floor tram designed to operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Considering Edmonton's harsh winter climate, the tram is engineered to ensure stable operation even at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. The city of Edmonton, Alberta, has named Hyundai Rotem Company as its preferred proponent to supply high-floor light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for use on the Capital and Metro lines. The tram delivery comes as Edmonton continues grappling with transit project delays.

The Valley Line Southeast, which opened in November 2023, was originally scheduled for December 2020 before experiencing multiple postponements. Hyundai Rotem defeated established competitors including Siemens, CAF Group and Alstom to win the Edmonton contract.
