Maximizing Space: What to Plant in Large Rectangular Planters
Large rectangular planters offer ample space to create lush, vibrant gardens in both residential and commercial settings. Whether you're aiming for a modern, minimalist look or a traditional, overflowing with greenery aesthetic, there's a wealth of plants that thrive in these planters. This guide will help you make the most of your large rectangular planters, providing insights into plant selection, arrangement, and care.
Understanding Your Planter
Before delving into plant choices, it's crucial to understand your planter's dimensions, aspect, and material. Large rectangular planters come in various sizes, typically ranging from 36" to 72" in length, 12" to 24" in width, and 12" to 24" in depth. Consider the planter's aspect ratio (length to width) when selecting plants to ensure a balanced, harmonious look.
The material of your planter also plays a role. Wood, metal, and concrete planters can withstand a broader range of plants, while plastic and fiberglass may be more suited to plants with less invasive root systems.
Choosing the Right Plants
Evergreens for Structure
Evergreens provide year-round structure and texture to your planter garden. Opt for varieties with different heights, textures, and colors to create visual interest. Some excellent choices include:
- Leyland Cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii) - A fast-growing, tall evergreen perfect for creating a backdrop.
- Golden Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus 'Aureus') - A compact, golden-leaved evergreen that adds a pop of color.
- Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star') - A low-growing, silvery-blue evergreen that adds contrast and texture.
Seasonal Color
Complement your evergreens with seasonal color using annual and perennial flowers. Select plants with varying heights, bloom times, and foliage colors to create a dynamic, ever-changing display. Some standout choices include:
- Iberis (Candytuft) - A low-growing, white-flowering perennial that blooms in early spring.
- Lavender (Lavandula) - A fragrant, purple-flowering perennial that blooms in late spring to summer.
- Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) - A cheerful, yellow-flowering annual that blooms from summer to fall.
- Pansies (Viola × wittrockiana) - A cool-season annual that blooms in a wide range of colors from fall to spring.
Ornamental Grasses for Movement
Ornamental grasses add texture, movement, and a touch of the wild to your planter garden. Choose varieties with different heights, colors, and growth habits to create a dynamic, naturalistic look. Some must-haves include:
- Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster') - A tall, upright grass with airy, pinkish flowers that turn beige in fall.
- Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - A low-growing, steel-blue grass that adds texture and contrast.
- Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' - A medium-sized grass with narrow, green-and-cream stripes that catch the light.
Arranging Your Plants
Arrange your plants in the planter using the "thriller, filler, spiller" method for a balanced, cohesive look. Place taller plants (thrillers) at the back or center, shorter plants (fillers) in the middle, and trailing plants (spillers) at the front or edges. This method ensures that each plant has enough space to grow and that the planter is visually appealing from all angles.
Caring for Your Plants
Large rectangular planters require regular care to keep your plants looking their best. Water your plants deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions and plant type. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring and again in late summer to early fall. Mulch the surface of the soil to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Prune your plants as needed to maintain their shape and encourage bushiness. Remove dead or damaged foliage promptly to prevent disease and pests. Monitor your plants for signs of pests or diseases, and address any issues promptly to keep your planter garden healthy and vibrant.
Creating a Cohesive Look
Unify your large rectangular planter with a cohesive design scheme. Choose plants with complementary colors, textures, and growth habits. Repeat key plants throughout the planter to create a sense of unity. Consider the overall aesthetic of your space, and select plants that complement your home's architecture and surrounding landscape.
Don't be afraid to experiment with different plant combinations and arrangements. Large rectangular planters offer ample space to create a unique, personalized garden that reflects your style and adds value to your space.
