Ever found yourself in a creative pinch, wondering if your favorite Sharpie marker can be used on your beloved clay art? You're not alone. The versatility of Sharpies and the malleability of clay make for an intriguing combination, but the answer isn't as simple as a yes or no. Let's delve into the world of clay and Sharpies to find out if, and when, you can use them together.

It’s important to make sure the lines are inky and solid. - After a few minutes of drying, I submerge the whole piece in glaze (Cone 10 reduction) and the sharpie drawings resist the glaze! - Once my glaze is dry, I go back and skim off large drips of glaze using a metal rib. I also use a detailing tool to remove any glaze flecks that remain on the raw clay where the drawing is. Clay, in its various forms like air-dry, polymer, or kiln-fired, offers a unique canvas for artistic expression. Sharpies, on the other hand, are beloved for their vibrant colors and permanent ink. But can these two mediums play nice together? The short answer is: it depends. Let's explore the possibilities under two main topics: air-dry and polymer clay, and kiln-fired clay.

Air-Dry and Polymer Clay

Air-dry and polymer clay are popular for their ease of use and accessibility. They can be manipulated, textured, and painted with a variety of mediums. So, can you use Sharpies on them?

Yes, you can! Sharpies are a great way to add bold, vibrant colors to your air-dry or polymer clay creations. Here's how:

Using Sharpies on Air-Dry Clay

Air-dry clay is porous, which makes it an excellent canvas for Sharpies. The ink can seep into the clay's surface, creating a rich, vibrant color. Here are a few tips:

  • Let your clay piece dry completely before using Sharpies. This ensures the ink doesn't bleed or smudge.
  • Use light, even strokes. Sharpies can be a bit unpredictable on clay, so it's best to start with light layers and build up as needed.
  • Avoid using water-based markers. They can react with the clay and cause discoloration or damage.

Polymer clay is non-porous, so it behaves differently than air-dry clay when it comes to Sharpies. Here's what you need to know:

  • You can use Sharpies on polymer clay, but the color may not be as vibrant as on air-dry clay. The ink sits on the surface rather than seeping in.
  • To get the best results, apply a thin layer of acrylic paint or gesso to your polymer clay piece before using Sharpies. This creates a porous surface for the ink to adhere to.
  • Again, avoid using water-based markers. They can cause the polymer clay to soften and lose its shape.

Kiln-fired clay, such as ceramics and porcelain, is fired at high temperatures to make it non-porous and durable. So, can you use Sharpies on it?

While you can use Sharpies on unfired kiln clay, the high temperatures of the kiln will cause the ink to burn off. Here's what you can do instead:

1.8K views · 101 reactions | Earlier this month we posted a reel about using gold metallic @sharpie as an alternative to wax resist! Here is the final result of the piece shown in the beginning of that reel! 🥳 ❓A few clarifications/answers to some common questions we got about this technique: 1) We drew the design with Sharpie Gold Metallic fine-point permanent marker on bisque ware (previously fired clay), not green ware. 2) In our limited experience, this method works best when dipping with a stable (not runny) glaze, rather than brushing glaze on, as brushed glazes might tend to sit on top of the sharpie rather than running off. 3) We did have to do a little cleanup to the glaze that beaded a bit on top of the design (you can see this briefly in the video), but it maybe only took 2 minutes! It’s not perfect, but we’re still pretty excited about the result. 4) On both of our light and dark clay pieces, the sharpie did burn off, and there was no metallic residue left. We did notice a slight color change to the dark clay after the glaze firing though. So many of you said you were excited to try this yourselves- any updates? We’d love to hear about your results! Underglazes and Glazes

Underglazes and glazes are specifically designed to be fired in a kiln. They come in a variety of vibrant colors and can be used to create beautiful, permanent designs on your clay pieces. Here's how:

  • Apply underglazes or glazes to your clay piece using a brush. You can create designs, patterns, or solid colors.
  • Let the piece dry completely. Some underglazes and glazes may require a second coat or multiple layers for full opacity.
  • Fire your piece according to the manufacturer's instructions. The high temperatures will fuse the underglaze or glaze to the clay, creating a permanent, durable design.

In the world of clay and Sharpies, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. But with a bit of experimentation and the right techniques, you can create stunning, vibrant art that's uniquely yours. So, go ahead, grab your Sharpies, and let your creativity run wild on your next clay project!
