Jesus Makes Breakfast On The Beach

Breakfast by the Sea - After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went. Tell the children that in today's Bible story Jesus makes his friends, the disciples, breakfast on the beach.

Ask them to listen and discover what Jesus made for breakfast. Story: Have the children close their eyes and imagine being at the beach early in the morning. If you like, ask them what they might see and hear.

Jesus directed them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat, resulting in a miraculous fish catch. Jesus cooked breakfast for these followers on the beach and then provided Peter with a new opportunity to follow Him and care for others in the future. Peter had previously denied Jesus, but now Jesus says to "feed my sheep.".

After Jesus tells them to cast the net on the other side of the boat, they have a net full of 153 fish! Jesus then "sets the table" and serves them breakfast on the beach. As Jesus cooked breakfast on the beach for his disciples, he communicated the importance of rest, restoration, and his sovereignty. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.

This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. (John 21:9-14 RSV) Several things here have parallels in the work of fishing for men. Notice that Jesus supplied the original fish and bread for this breakfast.

The Risen Jesus appeared to seven of the disciples at dawn, on the beach of Lake Galilee. There he had breakfast with them and appointed St Peter as shepherd of the Church. John tells one more story.

The breakfast on the shore is a moment of restoration and commissioning, particularly for Peter, who would soon be reinstated and charged with shepherding Jesus' flock (John 21:15-19). Symbolism and Imagery: The charcoal fire may evoke memories of Peter's denial of Jesus (John 18:18), setting the stage for his forthcoming restoration. Near the end of the gospel of John, (in John 21:1-14), we find a story where, some days after Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, seven of Jesus's disciples have travelled north from Jerusalem to the sea of Galilee.
