How to Make a Rounded Cabinet

Creating a Stylish Rounded Cabinet: A Comprehensive Guide

Embracing the curve is a fantastic way to add a touch of elegance and uniqueness to your home. A rounded cabinet is not only visually appealing but also functional, as it allows for better use of space. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of creating a stunning rounded cabinet, from planning to the final polish.

Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you start, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need:

  • Plywood (for the cabinet body)
  • Plywood or MDF (for the doors and shelves)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws and nails
  • Wood filler
  • Sanding paper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Paint or stain (for finishing)
  • Router (for rounding edges)
  • Jigsaw (for cutting curves)
  • Circular saw (for cutting straight lines)
  • Drill (for pilot holes and attaching hardware)
  • Clamps
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

Design and Measure

First, decide on the size and shape of your cabinet. A common height for cabinets is 30-36 inches, but you can adjust this to fit your space. For a rounded cabinet, you'll typically want the width and depth to be the same, creating a square or rectangular base with rounded edges.

Once you've decided on the size, sketch out your design, including the placement of shelves and doors. Measure and mark these dimensions on your plywood.

Cut the Pieces

Using a circular saw, cut out the base, sides, back, and top of your cabinet. For the doors and shelves, you'll need to cut out the same dimensions, plus a bit extra for the rounded edges.

Create the Rounded Edges

To create the rounded edges, you'll need a router with a round-over bit. Attach your base, sides, and back together using wood glue and clamps, ensuring the corners are square. Then, using your router, round over the edges.

For the doors and shelves, use a jigsaw to cut out the rounded edges. You can create a template for this by drawing a curve on a piece of paper, then tracing it onto your wood. Cut along the line, then use this piece as a template for the rest of your doors and shelves.

Assemble the Cabinet

Once your pieces are cut and rounded, it's time to assemble your cabinet. Apply wood glue to the joints, then use clamps to hold them together while the glue dries. You can also use screws or nails for extra support.

Before attaching the top, install your shelves. Mark their position on the inside of the cabinet, then use a drill to create pilot holes. Attach the shelves using screws or nails.

Add the Doors and Hardware

Attach your doors using hinges. Make sure they're level and aligned with the front of the cabinet. You can also install knobs or pulls for a finished look.

Sand and Finish

Once your cabinet is assembled, it's time to sand it down. Start with 120 grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots, then switch to 220 grit for a smooth finish. Wipe off any dust, then apply your paint or stain. Allow it to dry completely before using your cabinet.
