Effortless Rounded Corners on Furniture: A Simple DIY Guide
Crafting Perfect Edges: A Guide to Creating Rounded Corners on Furniture
In the world of furniture making, the devil is in the details. One such detail that can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of your furniture is adding rounded corners. This technique not only softens the overall look but also makes the furniture safer and more comfortable to use. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to achieve this, from the comfort of your own workshop.
Understanding the Basics: Tools and Materials
Before you start, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need:
Router with a roundover bit
Clamps
Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
Safety glasses
Dust mask
Furniture glue
Wood pieces for your project
Choosing the Right Router Bit
The key to successful rounded corners lies in the router bit you use. A roundover bit is designed specifically for this task. The size of the bit determines the radius of the curve. Common sizes range from 1/8" to 1/2". Choose a bit that suits your desired curve radius.

Marking and Cutting
First, mark the corners you want to round. Use a pencil and a straight edge to draw a line from the corner at the desired radius. This will serve as your guide for routing.
Secure the wood piece in a vise or use clamps to hold it firmly in place. Start the router at the edge of the wood, allowing the bit to cut into the wood gradually. Follow your marked line, keeping the router level and steady. Always router in the direction of the wood grain to prevent tear-out.
Sanding and Finishing
After routing, sand the edges smooth. Start with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots, then switch to 220-grit for a smooth finish. Be sure to sand with the grain of the wood.

If you're using plywood, you may need to reinforce the edges after routing. Apply furniture glue along the edge, then clamp a piece of solid wood in place. This will strengthen the edge and provide a smooth surface for finishing.
Rounding Corners on Drawer and Door Faces
Rounding the corners of drawer and door faces adds a nice touch to your furniture. The process is similar to rounding the edges of a board, but you'll need to use a flush-trim bit to ensure the face frame and the drawer or door are flush with each other.
First, route the face frame. Then, use the flush-trim bit to route the drawer or door face. This will ensure a smooth, flush edge. Sand and finish as usual.

Practice Makes Perfect
Like any other skill, mastering the art of rounding corners takes practice. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts aren't perfect. Keep practicing, and you'll soon be crafting furniture with beautiful, smooth rounded corners.
Remember, safety is paramount when using power tools. Always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when routing. Keep your workspace clean and well-lit to prevent accidents.
