What is Modal Fabric Made From? Exploring the Eco-Friendly Fiber Journey

By Thund

Modal fabric begins its life not in a factory, but on a farm, derived from the cellulose of beech trees. This specific type of wood pulp undergoes a sophisticated chemical process to transform into a luxurious, soft fiber that is celebrated in the textile industry for its feel and versatility.

The Source: Beech Trees and Cellulose

The primary ingredient in modal fabric is beech tree pulp. Manufacturers source hardwood from sustainably managed forests, primarily in Europe. Unlike standard paper pulp, the cellulose extracted for modal is of a particularly high quality, characterized by long, strong fibers. This natural cellulose is the raw material that forms the backbone of the fabric, providing the structure that will later be broken down and reformed into threads.

The Chemical Transformation: The Viscose Process

To turn solid wood into a wearable fiber, the cellulose undergoes a process known as viscose, or regenerated cellulose production. The wood pulp is first treated with sodium hydroxide to create cellulose sheets. These sheets are then shredded, aged to improve quality, and subsequently treated with carbon disulfide to produce a substance called cellulose xanthate. This intermediate is dissolved in a sodium hydroxide solution to create a viscous solution, which gives the "viscose" its name. This liquid is the bridge between the natural wood and the synthetic-feeling fabric.

From Liquid to Yarn

The viscous solution is carefully extruded through tiny spinnerets into a bath of diluted sulfuric acid. This bath causes the cellulose to coagulate, forming long, continuous strands of filament. These filaments are then washed, bleached, and dried. At this stage, the material is essentially a regenerated fiber, chemically identical to the cellulose harvested from the tree but physically altered into a form suitable for spinning. Unlike standard viscose, which can be brittle, modal production often involves improvements that result in a stronger, more flexible filament.

The Birth of the Fabric: Weaving and Knitting

Once the regenerated filaments are ready, they are spun into yarn. The thickness of the yarn determines the final use of the modal, ranging from fine denier for sheer hosiery to thicker weights for clothing and bedding. This yarn is then woven or knitted into fabric. Weaving creates a tight, smooth sheet of material, often used for luxury sheets, while knitting creates a stretchy, comfortable structure ideal for t-shirts and activewear. The resulting fabric is significantly stronger than cotton at the same weight and feels exceptionally smooth against the skin.

Blending for Performance

In modern textile production, modal is rarely used in its 100% pure form for most applications. Instead, it is frequently blended with other fibers to enhance its natural properties. Blending modal with spandex or elastane adds crucial stretch and recovery, making it perfect for fitted clothing. Blending it with cotton can improve the drape and softness of the cotton, while blending it with polyester can increase the fabric's durability and resistance to wrinkles. These combinations allow brands to create materials that are soft, breathable, and resilient.

Sustainability and Certifications

Because modal is derived from wood, its environmental impact is tied to forestry practices. Responsible manufacturers source wood from certified sustainable forests, such as those managed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The production of modal is considered more eco-friendly than cotton farming, as beech trees require significantly less water and land to grow. Furthermore, the chemical recovery process used in modern modal production allows for the recycling of solvents, reducing the overall environmental footprint of the fabric.
