It's hard to see where a table could go, if you want to have a "living" area. I would make that island top as large as you can, so you can use for both eating and work space. You don't say how many are in your family, but it's not going to work to have chairs/stools on the inside of the table where the kitchen work area is.

The table is also at a lower height than the countertops, which results in a more natural flow through the space that I find makes it easier to move around the kitchen. My experience is proof that an island shouldn't be considered the default solution for kitchens. Consider keeping things simple with a table and chairs.

My initial thought, was that I wanted the stove and a small sink in there, and also to be big enough to have a bar in front of the stove. Safety-wise for a baby and comfort for guests, I'd go with the dining table. You could put in a farmhouse style dining table in the kitchen.

If you can get creative and there's enough space, find a small waterfall style island and push a square or rectangle dining table right next to it. Best of both worlds! On a recent Unsellable House's they enlarged the kitchen with an island with stools but left no real room for a table.

I've seen this on Good Bones multiple times, too and think it's awful. I like an island for a quick breakfast, lunch, or snack but for a family dinner? Kind of hard to have a real conversation with someone when you can't actually see them 3 stools over. I don't entertain a lot.

I went with an island with a pullout table. It is pushed in most of the time to allow for better flow, but the seating is easily accessible when I want or need it. Or if it is too small, which one should we go with, a kitchen island (with some bar seats) or just a dining table? I like the idea of a kitchen island as it looks nicer and allows for a bit of chatting when, but not having a dining table at all makes it very tricky when having guests.

We are a couple and soon hoping to have a baby as well.
