Unlike structures built directly on the ground, gravity is a big problem for bridges. As gravity pushes down on a structure built on land, the ground is also pushing back up. Bridges lack this advantage! They go across a gap where the ground is not there pushing back up from underneath. To overcome this problem, people design bridges to transfer the force that gravity is exerting on the bridge deck to the ground through different methods.

A hinged square can skew while its side lengths stay the same. A triangle fixes that geometry. Look for diagonal braces on your next walk, then ask what shape each brace creates. Real bridge performance still depends on materials, joints, and loads.
