Understanding the Deer Tick Lifecycle
Deer ticks, like all ticks, have a complex life cycle that involves four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each stage feeds on a host, with larvae and nymphs typically feeding on small mammals and birds, while adults prefer larger mammals like deer, hence their name.
Larval Stage: Can They Transmit Lyme Disease?
Larval deer ticks are tiny, about the size of a poppy seed, and are not known to transmit Lyme disease. This is primarily because they have not yet fed on an infected host. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick.

Adult deer ticks are less likely to transmit Lyme disease than nymphs, primarily because they are more likely to be detected and removed before they can feed for an extended period. Adult ticks are also more likely to be infected with other diseases, such as anaplasmosis and babesiosis, which can cause additional health issues.

Preventing Lyme Disease: Tips for Tick Protection
Given that larval deer ticks cannot transmit Lyme disease, it's important to focus on preventing tick bites from nymphal and adult ticks. Here are some tips for protecting yourself from tick bites:
- Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin and treat clothing with products containing 0.5% permethrin.
- Avoid areas with high grass and leaf litter, and walk in the center of trails when hiking.
- Perform daily tick checks on yourself, your children, and your pets, especially in and around the hair, under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, and around the waist.
- Shower soon after being outdoors to help wash off unattached ticks and make it easier to find ticks that are crawling on you.
If you find a tick attached to your skin, remove it promptly and carefully using fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid crushing the tick or putting your fingers near your mouth or eyes.
