Michigan is one of the most recognizable places on Earth from space. Astronauts aboard the ISS easily spot its distinctive mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula and rugged Upper Peninsula, surrounded by four Great Lakes—Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. The sharp contrast between land and vast blue water clearly defines its borders from 250 miles up. The visible straits and Mackinac Bridge further highlight its unique two-peninsula geography. Frequently photographed from orbit, Michigan stands out as one of the most photogenic and identifiable U.S. states.

Satellite images capture the algae bloom in Lake Erie in 2017. The algae bloom is caused in part by phosphorous runoff from farms and poses a health risk.

Great Lakes Go For Fully Frozen

Seen from orbit, Lake Erie appears locked in winter, its surface a fractured mosaic of frosted white ice sheets and pale turquoise water. Cracks and snowdrifts trace delicate patterns across the frozen basin, while deep teal currents cut through the pale ice near a slate-gray shoreline.
