Bill Johnson, the brash American who became the first U.S. skier to win an Olympic downhill title, has died after a long illness, the U.S. ski team said Friday. He was 55. Johnson died Thursday at an assisted living facility in Gresham, Oregon. His health had been on the decline for several years after a skiing accident and a series of strokes.
On Sunday (February 8th), Lindsey Vonn crashed during the women's downhill ski race at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Vonn, who earned a gold medal in the same event in 2010, could be heard crying out in pain as medical staff rushed to her side. The following day (February 9th), Vonn addressed her crash in a statement on social media. Despite the devastating end to her Olympic run, Vonn said she has "no regrets."
