Why Extra Social Security Deposit This Month
The Ways - 👀 Dozens of you wrote that your check is nowhere near the number shown for your state, and the data backs you up more than the last version of this chart did. These are averages, and a smaller number of large checks pulls an average up. This update adds the median, the check in the exact middle. Nationally the average retired worker gets $2,071 a month, the median is $1,992, and about 3 in 10 retired workers receive less than $1,500. The amounts are also figured before Medicare. Most people on Medicare have the Part B premium, $202.90 a month in 2026, taken out before the deposit arrives, so a $2,071 benefit lands as roughly $1,868. Your state does not set your check. Social Security uses your 35 highest-earning years, adjusted for wage growth, along with the age you claimed

Good - The 2.8% COLA bump sounds nice until you realize Medicare premiums are eating a big chunk of it before it ever hits your account. Here's what changed with Social Security for 2026, and what it actually means for your check. The average retiree got a $56 monthly increase from the COLA, bringing the typical benefit to about $2,071.
