Understanding Presidents' Day
Presidents' Day originated in the late 19th century to celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the first U.S. president. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved the observance of Washington's birthday from February 22 to the third Monday of February, creating a long weekend for federal employees. Around the 1980s, the holiday started to be marketed as "Presidents' Day" to honor all U.S. presidents.
