Ideally, you will need two large diameter logs for the legs and a slightly curved log for the seat for optimal ergonomics. Alongside the logs, you will need thick wooden dowels for joinery and a strong, weather-resistant wood glue.

You cannot rely on standard power tools for this task; the process demands specific equipment to handle the density of the wood. A reliable chainsaw is essential for shaping the logs initially, while a drawknife or adze is required for the meticulous hand-shaping of the tenons. Shaping the Legs and Base

Preparing the Log Ends

Begin by squaring the ends of your chosen leg logs to ensure stability. Use your chainsaw to cut the logs to your desired height, typically between 14 and 16 inches, which provides an ideal seating position. If the bark is loose, remove it now to prevent it from falling off during use and to allow the wood to dry evenly.

Creating the Tenon

With the legs squared, you must mark the exact center point where the seat log will rest. The goal is a tight fit that requires gentle persuasion with a wooden mallet, ensuring the connection is robust enough to support significant weight.

Crafting the Seat and Backrest

The seat log is the most critical element for comfort. You must select a log with a slight curve that follows the shape of the human body, lifting the ends slightly higher than the center.
