Mastering the Art of Sewing Lined Curtains: A Comprehensive Guide

Sewing lined curtains not only adds a touch of elegance to your windows but also provides excellent insulation and light control. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, from measuring to hemming, ensuring your curtains are perfect and professional-looking.

Gather Your Materials and Tools

Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. You'll need:

  • Fabric for the main curtain and lining
  • Thread that matches your fabric
  • Sewing machine with a universal needle
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Tape measure
  • Straight pins or fabric clips
  • Hemming tape or fusible web (optional)
  • Curtain rod and hardware

Measure Accurately for Perfect Fit

Accurate measuring is crucial for curtains that fit well and function properly. Here's how to measure:

How To Sew Curtains

  1. Measure the width of your window, including any trim or molding. This will be the width of your curtain.
  2. Decide on the length you want. Standard lengths are 63" or 84", but you can make them longer or shorter to suit your needs. Remember to measure from the top of the window to where you want the curtain to end.
  3. Consider adding an extra 2" to 4" to your length for the header (the part at the top that goes over the curtain rod).

Cut and Prepare Your Fabric

Once you've measured, cut your main fabric and lining to the same width and length. For the header, cut a strip of fabric 5" to 6" wide and the same length as your curtain.

Sew the Header

The header is where the curtain rod will slide through. To sew it:

  1. Fold the header strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and press.
  2. Sew along the long edge with a ΒΌ" seam allowance.
  3. Turn right side out and press.
  4. Topstitch along the bottom edge to keep the header closed.

Sew the Side Seams

With right sides together, sew the main fabric and lining together along the side edges, leaving the bottom open. Press the seams open.

Hem the Bottom Edge

To create a neat, finished edge:

  1. Fold the bottom edge of the curtain up 2" to 4", depending on the look you want. Press.
  2. Fold it up again, this time enclosing the raw edge and pressing.
  3. Sew close to the inner fold to create a neat hem.

Attach the Header to the Curtain

With the curtain and header both right side out:

  1. Place the header on top of the curtain, matching the raw edges at the top.
  2. Sew along the top edge, leaving the header open at the sides.
  3. Turn the curtain right side out through the header opening.
  4. Press the header and topstitch along the top edge to keep it closed.

Hang Your Curtains

Now that your lined curtains are complete, it's time to hang them. Follow the instructions that came with your curtain rod hardware, and enjoy your beautiful, functional new curtains!
