Transforming Scrap into Style: A DIY Pallet Chair Tutorial
In the world of upcycling, few materials are as versatile and abundant as the humble wooden pallet. With a little creativity and some basic tools, you can turn these discarded crates into a stylish and functional piece of furniture - a pallet chair. This DIY guide will walk you through the process, from gathering materials to enjoying your new eco-friendly seat.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have the following materials and tools:
- One wooden pallet
- Saw (hand saw, jigsaw, or circular saw)
- Hammer
- Screwdriver (electric or manual)
- Screws (2-inch and 1.5-inch)
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Paintbrushes or foam rollers (if painting)
- Outdoor sealant (optional, for longevity)
Safety First: Choose the Right Pallet
Not all pallets are created equal. For safety and comfort, choose a pallet made from untreated, solid wood. Avoid pallets with broken or splintered boards, and steer clear of those marked with "MB" or "HT," which indicate they've been treated with chemicals.

Disassemble the Pallet
Using a hammer and screwdriver, carefully remove the pallet's slats and supports. Keep the longest pieces for the chair's backrest and seat, and set aside the shorter ones for the legs and arms.
Cut and Assemble the Chair Frame
Using your saw, cut the longest slats to create the backrest and seat. You'll need two pieces for the backrest (around 36 inches long each) and one for the seat (around 18 inches long). Attach these to the supports using 2-inch screws, creating a basic "A" frame shape.
Create the Legs and Arms
Cut four pieces (around 12 inches long each) for the legs and two pieces (around 16 inches long each) for the arms. Attach these to the frame using 1.5-inch screws, ensuring the chair is balanced and stable.

Sand and Finish
Using coarse sandpaper (120-grit), sand the chair's surfaces smooth. Wipe off any dust, then use fine sandpaper (220-grit) to achieve a smooth finish. If desired, apply paint or stain, allowing it to dry completely. For added protection, apply an outdoor sealant.
Enjoy Your New Pallet Chair!
With a little effort and creativity, you've transformed a discarded pallet into a stylish, eco-friendly chair. Place it on your patio, in your garden, or even indoors to enjoy your handiwork. Happy upcycling!
