Bath City Walls

Bath's city walls (also referred to as borough walls) were a sequence of defensive structures built around the city of Bath in England. Roman in origin, then restored by the Anglo-Saxons, and later strengthened in the High medieval period, the walls formed a complete circuit. They enclosed the historic core of the modern city, an area of approximately 23 acres (9.3 ha) [2] including the Roman.

City Wall - Old Orchard Street What is it? The city walls of Bath date from the fourth century, but were repaired and rebuilt throughout the medieval period. They were 10 ft (3 metres) wide at their base and over 20 ft (6 metres) high. They served to defend the city until after the Civil War.

Bath's first walls were built by the Romans.[1] The Anglo-Saxons constructed a fortified burh at Bath, utilising the existing city walls, maintaining the city as a centre of regional power.[2] Bath, located along the northern edge of the kingdom of Wessex, would have also guarded against any. The city was a compact walled area, with limited development outside the walls.

The northern and southern boundaries are now marked by the roads known as Upper Borough Walls and Lower Borough Walls. The circuit walls of Aquae Sulis, enclosing an area of some 23 ha, began in the Roman period and were later reinforced in the Anglo. Bath did not spring up from an empty landscape in the eighteenth century although, at the time, almost nothing was known of the Roman city of Aquae Sulis buried beneath it.
