If you don't have VDC or Adaptive Drive, the switch adjusts other stuff (transmission, steering, and in Eco Pro coasting, AC, seat heating), but obviously not the dampers. With VDC, it adjusts the dampers too. The below is from a USA manual where they call VDC Dynamic Damper Control.

This original BMW left front strut fits F10 528i, 535i, 550i, and Hybrid 5 models with the optional Adaptive Drive electronic suspension. This suspension system may also be referred to as VDC (Variable Damper Control) or EDC (Electronic Damper Control). This module is for cars with Dynamic Drive (BMW option code S229A).
