At Bimmerforums, you will find technical how. I have been looking for ages for the older versions of the BMW Build Your Own/Configurator websites. I think that it would be really cool to go back and build out many of the older models, see all the different factory options etc.
I believe the online tool came out around the launch of the E90 in 2005.
