I dont know about usage in other languages, but at least in NZ English it is everyday practice for men of any age to refer to themselves as boys,, and similarly for young>>older women to call themselves girls- and also for men/women of all ages to refer to each other that way- of course, there has to be some degree of familiarity between them already.
