In the world of academic writing, citation styles can be a daunting task for many students and researchers. The Modern Language Association (MLA) style is one of the most widely used citation styles, and in-line citation is a crucial aspect of it. In this article, we will delve into the world of in-line citation MLA, providing you with a comprehensive guide on how to format your citations correctly.
What is In-Line Citation MLA?
In-line citation MLA, also known as parenthetical citation, is a method of citing sources within the text of your essay or research paper. It involves inserting a parenthetical citation, usually at the end of a sentence or quotation, that provides the necessary information to identify the source. The purpose of in-line citation is to give credit to the original authors of the ideas, words, and research presented in your work.
Basic Components of In-Line Citation MLA
There are three basic components of in-line citation MLA: the author's last name, the page number (if applicable), and the source title. Here's a breakdown of how to format these components:
- Author's last name: The author's last name should be placed in parentheses, followed by a space.
- Page number: If the source is a book or article with page numbers, include the page number after the author's last name, separated by a space.
- Source title: The title of the source should be abbreviated and included in the citation. For example, if the title is "The Great Gatsby," it would be abbreviated as "Gatsby."

Special Cases in In-Line Citation MLA
There are some special cases to consider when using in-line citation MLA:
- Multiple authors: If a source has multiple authors, separate their names with commas within the parenthetical citation. For example, (Johnson, Smith, and Williams).
- No author: If a source has no author, use the title in the citation instead. For example, ("The Benefits of Exercise").
- No page numbers: If a source has no page numbers, omit the page number from the citation.
