Create a Safe and Organized Space with a DIY Extension Cord Holder

In today's tech-driven world, we're constantly surrounded by an array of electronic devices, each requiring a power source. This often leads to a tangled web of extension cords, posing safety hazards and causing unsightly clutter. A DIY extension cord holder is an excellent solution to keep your space safe, organized, and tidy. Let's explore how you can create one using simple materials and tools.

Why Use an Extension Cord Holder?

Extension cords are essential for powering devices in hard-to-reach places, but they can also become a trip hazard or cause damage if not properly managed. Here's why using an extension cord holder is a smart idea:

  • Prevents tripping hazards
  • Keeps cords off the floor, reducing wear and tear
  • Organizes multiple cords in one place
  • Protects cords from damage
  • Improves the overall appearance of your space

Materials Needed for Your DIY Extension Cord Holder

  • PVC pipe (schedule 40, 1/2" or 3/4" diameter)
  • PVC end caps
  • PVC cement and primer
  • Hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Sandpaper (optional, for smoothing edges)
  • Drill and drill bit (for mounting)
  • Mounting screws or adhesive (depending on your chosen mounting method)

Steps to Create Your DIY Extension Cord Holder

1. Measure and Cut the PVC Pipe

Measure the length you want your extension cord holder to be, plus an additional 1.5 inches for each end cap. Mark the measurement on the PVC pipe using a pencil, then cut the pipe using a hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter.

2. Apply PVC Cement and Primer

Apply PVC primer to the ends of the cut pipe and the inside of the end caps. Allow the primer to dry for a few seconds, then apply PVC cement to both surfaces. Immediately attach the end caps to the pipe, twisting them slightly to ensure a tight seal. Hold the end caps in place for a few seconds to allow the cement to set.

3. Sand the Edges (Optional)

If desired, use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the PVC pipe or end caps.

4. Drill Mounting Holes

Determine where you want to mount your extension cord holder. Using a drill and the appropriate drill bit, create mounting holes in the PVC pipe. Make sure the holes are large enough to accommodate your chosen mounting method (screws or adhesive).

5. Mount Your DIY Extension Cord Holder

Using screws or adhesive, mount your extension cord holder to the wall or other surface. Ensure it's secure and level before proceeding.

6. Organize Your Extension Cords

Now that your DIY extension cord holder is mounted, you can organize your extension cords by feeding them through the PVC pipe. This will keep them neat, tidy, and out of the way.

  • Keep the holder away from heat sources and direct sunlight
  • Regularly clean the holder to remove any dust or debris
