Installing Landscape Timber Edging: A Comprehensive Guide

Transform your landscape with a neat, defined edge using timber. Not only does it enhance your garden's aesthetic, but it also prevents soil erosion and keeps your lawn and garden separate. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install landscape timber edging, ensuring a professional finish that will last for years.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Timber edging (pressure-treated or composite)
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel
  • Garden gloves
  • Gravel or sand (optional)
  • Stakes and string (for marking)
  • Level
  • Hammer or mallet

Planning Your Edging

Before you start, plan your edging route. It should follow the natural contours of your garden and be at least 4 inches away from plants to prevent root damage. Use stakes and string to mark out your line.

Preparing the Site

Remove any grass, weeds, or debris along the edging line. Dig a trench about 6-8 inches deep and 4 inches wide, using the string line as a guide. Ensure the bottom of the trench is level to provide a stable base for your timber.

Laying the First Piece

Start at a corner or straight edge. Place the first piece of timber in the trench, ensuring it's level and flush with the ground. Tap it down gently with a hammer or mallet if necessary. This piece will serve as a guide for the rest of the edging.

Laying the Remaining Edging

Lay the next piece of timber against the first, ensuring they're tightly butted together. Continue laying the edging along the trench, using a level to ensure each piece is flush with the ground. If you're using gravel or sand, fill the trench behind each piece as you go to provide extra stability.

Cutting Timber to Size

When you reach a corner or need to cut timber to size, use a saw to make clean cuts. Ensure the cut piece is level and fits snugly against the previous piece. You can use a mitre box for precise 45-degree cuts at corners.

Finishing Up

Once you've laid the final piece, backfill the trench with soil, ensuring the timber is still level. Gently compact the soil to secure the edging in place. If you've used gravel or sand, ensure it's level with the top of the timber.

Maintenance and Care

Timber Type Maintenance
Pressure-treated Stain or seal every 2-3 years to protect from UV damage and moisture
Composite Clean with a mild detergent and water annually. No staining or sealing required

Regular maintenance will keep your landscape timber edging looking its best and lasting for years to come.
