Talks/tours offered History of the house and restoration of 78 Derngate The life and work of W J Bassett. These two houses both appear to be modest works of art deco. Deco was the style that defined Hollywood's golden age and New York's soaring skyline, but, in the UK, it became suburbanised.

The architect was commissioned by Northampton model engineer, WJ Bassett. 78 Derngate Building Extension Built in 1815, 78 Derngate is a Grade II* listed Georgian house in the Cultural Quarter of Northampton, the interior of which was extensively remodelled in the early 1900s by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers. The house at 78 Derngate in Northampton was remodelled by designer and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1917 for the Bassett-Lowke family.

After two years of restoration work and nearly a decade of fund-raising, the original art deco designs are on show. The visitor centre at 78 Derngate is FREE admission to the Galleries, Shop and Dining Room restuarant. Tickets are available to visit 78 Dernagte, the Mackintosh designed house.

The C20 Society was delighted to find that Peter Behrens' groundbreaking house, New Ways, Northampton is for sale. Although sometimes billed as Art Deco, it could more properly be defined as Modern Movement or Expressionist and show the influence of the Vienna Secession - plus it was constructed in 1925-26, prior to the popularisation of Deco.
